A blood test that shows how quickly one ages - and thus calculate roughly how to live - scheduled to be available later this year in the UK market.
Critics of the test, which costs $ 700 (495 euro), maintain that the
controversial new technology opens the box.
Pandora, as eg Insurance companies could require the examination before proceeding to award contracts.
However, proponents of object that can provide valuable information on many diseases associated with aging - from heart disease to Alzheimer's and cancer.
The scientists who invented, for their part, say that it makes it possible to determine whether "biological age" of an atom coincides with the chronological.
The test is based on measuring the edges of chromosomes are called telomeres. The length of telomeres abbreviated as we age, and studies have shown that those who have telomeres of a length less than normal, die younger than those that have very long telomeres.
Experts believe that the control of telomere will be extended within the next 5 to 10 years, but scientists are already questioning the value and wonder if ethical issues raised by the widespread release to the public.
The anxiety is not only how to react which learns how "big", but the possibility to exploit the test companies and organizations that are trying to sell to ignorant of questionable quality anti-aging treatments and fake elixirs of life.
High accuracy
"We know that people are born with telomeres of a length shorter than normal, have a lower life expectancy," said Dr Maria Blasco, from the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (SNCR) in Madrid, which devised the new test.
"I do not know yet whether the longest telomeres ensure longer life - at least in humans.
Dr. Blasco said that the new test has greater weapon accuracy. "It can detect very small differences in telomere length and is so simple and fast, so they can analyze many samples simultaneously," he said. "The most important thing is that it can detect hazardous telomeres, ie those that are very close."
The company, Dr. Blasco The Life Length, is in discussions with medical diagnostic companies across Europe to put the test on the market and begin to collect blood samples will be sent to Spain for analysis. "It is likely in 2011 to complete the deal by a British diagnostics company," he said.
World premiere
Although Life Length is not the only company that offers test for measuring telomere is the only one preparing for disposal of such tests to the general public and only available to a test with sufficient accuracy to be of practical value, says Professor Jerry Sy from the Medical Center of Southwestern University in Texas.
"This is important for aging is the length of telomeres," said Dr. Sai, who is scientific advisor to Life Length. "What makes the cells to stop growing is the short length of telomeres - and reveals the test.
The two scientists say they currently can not use the results of tests to determine exactly how many months and years will die. The closer will be the length of telomeres, but the more imperative it is to take no steps to assist health, stress.
