The Civil Aviation Authority of Iceland announced today that it hopes to reopen the main airport of the island later today or in the evening, after the closure of the eruption of the most active volcano in the country Savvatokyriako.I situation ...
"Looks better now and hope to reopen the Keflavik airport later today or in the evening. We're not sure what time, but at least we think likely, "said spokeswoman Aviation Chiorntis Gkountmountsntotir.
The Keflavik is the main airport in Iceland, near the capital Reykjavik.
The Gkountmountsntotir said that there is evidence that the cloud of ash can be dissolved over the north Atlantic island, although it is still too early to pass such an assessment. More detailed assessment will be made later today.
Meanwhile, executive Icelandic Meteorological Office said volcanic ash could reach the north-west Scotland, even by this afternoon, but only at a height of 20,000 feet.
"Yes, this is true," said meteorologist Icelandic asked about the prognosis given to the airlines earlier today.
On Sunday, forecasters had estimated that the ash from the volcano which erupted Gkrimsvetn Saturday was expected to arrive in the airspace of Scotland by midday Tuesday.
At higher altitudes of 20,000 feet, the ash, which is considered less dangerous than to project one another Icelandic volcano a year ago, moving north and Greenland, said meteorologist at the Reuters news agency by telephone.
The European air control agency announced its part that if the firing of ash continued at the same rate, the cloud can reach the airspace of France and northern Spain on Thursday.
Commercial - cars and trucks - aircraft perform the bulk of their flights at a height of about 37-39000 feet.
Any decisions to impose restrictions on the flights will depend on the direction of the winds and whether the authorities believe that volcanic ash poses a risk to aircraft engines.
